Awatea '14 - '2013 was an outstanding vintage for New Zealand's answer to the Médoc and northern Rhône rolled into one: Hawke's Bay ... 2014 is thought of as potentially even better than the outstanding 2013.'
Bullnose '14 ★★★★★ - 'An instant sell-out... Sensational Syrah.'
Bullnose '14 - 'Loads of fruit in the mouth, complimented by just enough pepper and spice with a good backbone of very silky tannins and lively acidity carrying off a good long finish.' 92 Points
Bullnose '14 - 'As taut, refined and spicy an example of New Zealand syrah as you could find.'

Bullnose '13 - 'Potent perfume shows off the classy cedary oak profile and couples it to deeply concentrated blackberry fruits, leather char, and graphite-like scents. Impressive for its heft and control. Very classy. 93 points.'
Bullnose '13 ★★★★★ - 'The wine is gloriously perfumed showing black/blueberry, floral, cedar and mixed spice with a subtle infusion of earthy undertone. The palate is pure, seductive and beautifully flowing. A knockout syrah exhibiting elegance as well as power and generosity. At its best: 2016 to 2025.' 96 points
Bullnose '13 ★★★★★ - 'Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is rich and aromatic unfolding ethereal waves of ripe dark red and black berry fruits lifted with floral perfumes and exotic spice notes. Layers of pepper, earth and toasty oak add complexity. The nose is harmoniously interwoven and complete in presentation. Medium-bodied and elegant rich, succulently juicy fruit flavours of dark red and black berried fruit are lifted by violet and red florals, and melded with black pepper, spices and oak. The palate is supple and plush with fine-grained tannins underlining the flavours, which flow with plenty of energy and drive. The finesse and richness of exotic flavours is carried to a very long, lingering finish. This is a sensational, complete syrah of richness and finesse.'
'A beautiful expression of Bullnose Vineyards Syrah in this lovely red wine, which is made from grapes grown on iron-rich soils. This wine’s intensity in colour, aroma and complexity puts forward a good case for best vintage ever in Hawke’s Bay; thanks to its insanely attractive purple hue, its rich fruit flavours, its subtle floral aromas, its soft smooth tannins and the long flavoursome finish.'
'Very bright, youthful, deep purple/red colour. Nutty, floral, blue fruit aromas, spicy and almond-like, medium-bodied and smooth with abundant soft tannins and loads of black cherry fruit. Fleshy and supple. Delicious wine, with aging potential as well as early drinkability.' 93 points
'There’s never been a better time to buy and drink New Zealand Syrah. The 2013 vintage was universally hailed as Hawke’s Bay’s best ever. But don’t worry if you miss out – the 2014 is rumoured to be nearly as good. Bullnose '13 is elegant, powerful Syrah with intense dark berry fruit, violets, and mixed spice. Lovely and aromatic with a firm structure of fine tannins.' 96 Points ★★★★★
'96 Points. Bullnose Syrah ‘13 - Elegant, powerful Syrah with intense dark berry fruit, violets and mixed spice. Lovely and aromatic with a firm structure of fine tannins.'
'Te Mata is world-famous for their Coleraine, a Bordeaux blend, which on good days tastes more Bordeaux than Bordeaux itself. But they also know how to do syrah. It keeps very normal 13.5% alcohol and smells of blood, iron, smoke and tandoori spices. Slightly Cornas in style, it’s extremely true to the grape variety. Exemplary Syrah.'
Bullnose '12- 'The perfumed bouquet is intoxicating. This seems to be more fragrant than most years, displaying notes of raspberry, blueberry, dark plum and floral with a hint of spice. The medium-full-bodied palate is ripe and rounded with silky texture and lovely polished tannins. Seamless as usual, inviting as always; a delightful charmer.' 93 points ★★★★★
Bullnose '12- 'Very dark black-red colour with some purple hues on rim. The bouquet is elegantly presented and very attractively aromatic with lifted violet and spicy perfumes intermixed with black fruits and black pepper. This has ripeness and fragrance. The palate is elegant and stylishly proportion with fine and aromatic black fruits, black and white pepper, spices and oak elements adding lift. An elegant and aromatically detailed Syrah.' 18.5/20
Bullnose '12- 'Grown on some of the Hawke’s Bay area’s oldest syrah vines, roughly 23 years old. Slip of white pepper. Woody crackle of spice. Bright cherried fruit. Polished medium-bodied wine. Musky, perfumed oak makes a welcome appearance. This wine will not disappoint. ' 92+ points

Bullnose '11- 'One of New Zealand’s finest.'
"Make no bones about it, Te Mata wines are sheer brilliance. They are highly lauded, with the top tier, flagship wines being extremely sought after."
'Te Mata Estate - Four stars out of four. Grand and prestigious. Especially good within it’s price range.'
Bullnose '10 - 'Deeply coloured, it is finely scented, with deep, youthful plum and black-pepper flavours and a long, well rounded finish. A refined and elegant red, it’s already delicious, but also well worth cellaring.' Super Classic ★★★★★
Bullnose '10- 'Medium-bodied, with an elegant presentation, spicy black fruits with floral, tar and earthy layers are underlined by very fine powdery tannins and lacy acidity, resulting in a very smooth, silky textured palate.' 19/20 ★★★★★
Bullnose '10- 'Finely scented, with deep, youthful plum and black-pepper flavours and a long, well rounded finish. A refined and elegant red.' Super Classic ★★★★★
Bullnose '10- 'Describing Kiwi syrah as 'Rhone-like' is a cliche. Let’s switch it around and say some modern French Rhone reds are “New Zealand-like”, an idea well illustrated by this excellent drop from Hawke’s Bay. The nose is exotic and complex, with deep plummy fruit running through meaty notes, musky floral touches and suggestions of pepper, allspice and earth. It has super-fine texture, good depth and lovely intensity, yet it’s subtle, moreish and ultra-long at the finish.A bottle can disappear with indecent haste' ★★★★★
'Lovely, rich and velvety with strong plum, berry, fragrant violet aromas with hints of spice. Dense, powerful red with a peppery Rhone-like character. An elegant wine that delivers plenty of punch with great subtlety.' 97 points ★★★★★
Bullnose '7 & '10- 'A lovely stewed strawberry and spice character. Full body, with fine tannins and a savory finish.'
'Blackberries, fresh leather and spices on the nose. Cloves. Baking spices. Mace. Full-bodied, with lots of savory flavors and a pretty balance.' 91 points
'Good ruby, carmine and velvet. Bouquet is classic Bullnose syrah, fruit ripened to perfection emphasising florality and sensuous charm. Palate is youthful still, but set to marry up beautifully over the next five years. The 2010 follows on delightfully from the 2009, both representing New Zealand syrah at its most beautiful, rather than as heavyweights.'
Bullnose '10- "It’s a lovely velvet red with strong flavours of plum, berry and violets, and hints of spice."
Bullnose '10- "An elegant wine that delivers plenty of punch with great subtlety."
Bullnose '09 - 'A pronounced nose of blueberry compote and blackberry pie filling with hints of cloves, moss covered bark, allspice, toast and aniseed with a whiff of white pepper.' 90 points
'Modest alcohol, lots of spice, grown on 20-odd year old vines and produced in a consistent style since 1990; no wonder Te Mata Bullnose Syrah has a growing number of fans. And I count myself among them. This 2009 is cracking version of it too. It’s tight and (white) peppery, blessed with boysenberry and cherry-plum fruit flavour and succulent through the finish. It has ripeness, acidity, tannin, spice and length. It has a good, polished clip of oak but it’s cedary and new; it helps give the wine a bit of X-factor.' 95 points
Bullnose '09- 'Pure notes of red cherry and floral combined with subtle spice and dried herb complexity. Showing focus and fine texture, leading to a lingering, pristine finish. A beautifully framed and poised wine, destined to become a classic Bullnose.' 94 points
'Lovely elegant yet dense red with white and black pepper adding spice to red berry flavours. There’s also a touch of floral/violet character adding extra complexity. Lovely vibrant and slightly edgy red that will age splendidly. It has a great, rich and velvety texture. Terrific!' 96 points ★★★★★

'Syrah from Hawke's Bay is New Zealand’s most exciting emerging wine type. Bullnose ’09 is one of the best, showing typical regional purity in its aromas of berries, florals, rosewater and spice. It has a silky middleweight palate that’s complex yet fresh, very long and balanced by fine, dry tannins.'
Bullnose '09- "Lovely elegant yet dense red with white and black pepper adding spice to red berry flavours. Five stars."
Bullnose '09- "We think this is the best we’ve ever made” said winemaker Peter Cowley and, just quietly I think he’s right."
'Deep purple hued ruby red in colour, this had a sensational nose with finely fragrant florals, spices, pepper and black fruits, quite piercing in intensity. On palate, this was quite elegant, more gentle and plush, giving a real accessibility. Excellent fine textures, supple and with a lusciousness. A crowd pleaser that will keep 6-8+ years easily.' 18/20
Bullnose '08- 'Spicy, strawberry, raspberry and lavender tinged with good definition and lift, the oak deftly intertwined with the fruit, leading to a rounded allspice finish that is elegant and understated.' 92 points
'Bullnose 2008 is a stylish expression of syrah, displaying ripe berry fruits and subtle spice notes with a silky smooth palate. These premium reds from the 2008 vintage require medium-long term cellaring of six to ten years.'
Bullnose '08- 'A fantastic example of Hawke's Bay Syrah. Focused with years ahead of it.'
'Te Mata’s Bullnose, from the 2008 vintage – as good as any spicier styles of shiraz in Australia.'
'Deep, dark, black and purple hues to ruby red, a softly fine and refined nose with florals, black and red fruits, pepper and spices. With very fine-grained tannins, this is no blockbuster, but elegant and highly concentrated and with great length. The wine has a subtle richness lifting it to a new level.' 19/20
'From an outstanding vintage, this wine is a blend of three clones of shiraz and made from vines first planted in 1990. The attractive deep colour introduces a fragrant dark berry / plumy/ spicy nose which has understated intensity. The palate has great depth of flavour yet is very fine with long, powdery tannins and a hint of new oak. As enjoyable as it is now, this wine will benefit from 3-5 years’ cellaring. This is a fine expression of shiraz and, in my view, the best Bullnose to date.' Outstanding
'Sourced from a 20-year-old vineyard, Te Mata’s Syrah is one of Hawke’s Bay’s standard bearers. Polished, peppery and smoky, this is a very stylish wine.' ★★★★★
Elston '07 and Awatea '06 both featured in Matthew Jukes Top 60
Bullnose '06- 'A 100% Syrah from four different clones, one a pre-phylloxera clone from Chave in Hermitage. Full, deep and fl eshy in the northern Rhône style, like a broad-shouldered Saint-Joseph or supple Cornas.' Best New World Red, Decanter 2008
Bullnose '05- "Hawke’s Bay syrah is one of the most exciting wine styles I’ve tasted in the past five years."
Bullnose '05- "This is an elegantly structured wine with fine tannins, while the fruit is just on the right side of ripeness, giving it a captivating, spicy character."
Bullnose '04- 'Delivers such grace and depth of silky flavour that you know you are onto a winner. This will be a stunner in another 10 years too. If you can wait that long.'
Deep garnet red colour with mahogany hues, this had a dense nose of savoury meats, leather with earth and animal complexities. Full-flavoured yet quite elegant and lively, by way of its excellent acidity, this had concentration and depth and a fine tannin backbone which carried through to the long finish.' 18.5/20
