  • Bullnose '13 ★★★★★ - 'The wine is gloriously perfumed showing black/blueberry, floral, cedar and mixed spice with a subtle infusion of earthy undertone. • Bullnose '13 ★★★★★ - 'Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is rich and aromatic unfolding ethereal waves of ripe dark red and black berry fruits lifted with floral perfumes and exotic spice notes. Layers of pepper, earth and toasty oak add complexity. The nose is harmoniously interwoven and complete in presentation. Medium-bodied and elegant rich, succulently juicy fruit flavours of dark red and black berried fruit are lifted by violet and red florals, and melded with black pepper, spices and oak. The palate is supple and plush with fine-grained tannins underlining the flavours, which flow with plenty of energy and drive. The finesse and richness of exotic flavours is carried to a very long, lingering finish. This is a sensational, complete syrah of richness and finesse.'

This wine’s intensity in colour, aroma and complexity puts forward a good case for best vintage ever in Hawke’s Bay; thanks to its insanely attractive purple hue, its rich fruit flavours, its subtle floral aromas, its soft smooth tannins and the long flavoursome finish.'

  • 'There’s never been a better time to buy and drink New Zealand Syrah. The 2013 vintage was universally hailed as Hawke’s Bay’s best ever. But don’t worry if you miss out – the 2014 is rumoured to be nearly as good. Bullnose '13 is elegant, powerful Syrah with intense dark berry fruit, violets, and mixed spice. Lovely and aromatic with a firm structure of fine tannins.' 96 Points ★★★★★

  • 'Te Mata is world-famous for their Coleraine, a Bordeaux blend, which on good days tastes more Bordeaux than Bordeaux itself. But they also know how to do syrah. It keeps very normal 13.5% alcohol and smells of blood, iron, smoke and tandoori spices. Slightly Cornas in style, it’s extremely true to the grape variety. Exemplary Syrah.'

  • Bullnose '12- 'The perfumed bouquet is intoxicating. This seems to be more fragrant than most years, displaying notes of raspberry, blueberry, dark plum and floral with a hint of spice. The medium-full-bodied palate is ripe and rounded with silky texture and lovely polished tannins. Seamless as usual, inviting as always; a delightful charmer.' 93 points ★★★★★

  • Bullnose '12- 'Very dark black-red colour with some purple hues on rim. The bouquet is elegantly presented and very attractively aromatic with lifted violet and spicy perfumes intermixed with black fruits and black pepper. This has ripeness and fragrance. The palate is elegant and stylishly proportion with fine and aromatic black fruits, black and white pepper, spices and oak elements adding lift. An elegant and aromatically detailed Syrah.' 18.5/20

  • Bullnose '10- 'Describing Kiwi syrah as 'Rhone-like' is a cliche. Let’s switch it around and say some modern French Rhone reds are “New Zealand-like”, an idea well illustrated by this excellent drop from Hawke’s Bay. The nose is exotic and complex, with deep plummy fruit running through meaty notes, musky floral touches and suggestions of pepper, allspice and earth. It has super-fine texture, good depth and lovely intensity, yet it’s subtle, moreish and ultra-long at the finish.A bottle can disappear with indecent haste' ★★★★★

Palate is youthful still, but set to marry up beautifully over the next five years. The 2010 follows on delightfully from the 2009, both representing New Zealand syrah at its most beautiful, rather than as heavyweights.'

  • 'Modest alcohol, lots of spice, grown on 20-odd year old vines and produced in a consistent style since 1990; no wonder Te Mata Bullnose Syrah has a growing number of fans. And I count myself among them. This 2009 is cracking version of it too. It’s tight and (white) peppery, blessed with boysenberry and cherry-plum fruit flavour and succulent through the finish. It has ripeness, acidity, tannin, spice and length. It has a good, polished clip of oak but it’s cedary and new; it helps give the wine a bit of X-factor.' 95 points

A crowd pleaser that will keep 6-8+ years easily.' 18/20

  • 'Deep, dark, black and purple hues to ruby red, a softly fine and refined nose with florals, black and red fruits, pepper and spices. With very fine-grained tannins, this is no blockbuster, but elegant and highly concentrated and with great length. The wine has a subtle richness lifting it to a new level.' 19/20

  • 'From an outstanding vintage, this wine is a blend of three clones of shiraz and made from vines first planted in 1990. The attractive deep colour introduces a fragrant dark berry / plumy/ spicy nose which has understated intensity. The palate has great depth of flavour yet is very fine with long, powdery tannins and a hint of new oak. As enjoyable as it is now, this wine will benefit from 3-5 years’ cellaring. This is a fine expression of shiraz and, in my view, the best Bullnose to date.' Outstanding
