Tasting Notes 2003
Woodthorpe Syrah/Viognier 2003 is a vibrant crimson colour, with aromas and flavours of jasmin, cherry and anise. The palate is soft and supple, with fine tannins and a long finish. It will continue to develop in bottle for 4 - 6 years from harvest.
Woodthorpe Syrah/Viognier 2003 is a great match with richly flavoured and exotically spiced dishes. It is particularly well suited to the majority of Mediterranean cuisine, from Italian to Morrocan dishes, as well as soft ripened cheeses.
Total acidity as tartaric: 5.4g/l
Residual sugar: Dry
The grapes were destemmed and co-fermented in open top tanks with a warm, hand-plunged fermentation. The resulting wine was given extended maceration on skins before pressing and running off to French oak barrels. During its 15 months of maturation, the wine was topped and racked before a traditional egg-white fining and bottling in August 2004.
Handpicked from our Woodthorpe vineyard between the 17th April and 2nd May 2003 the Syrah grapes were combined with 2% Viognier.
The co-fermentation of Syrah with small amounts of the white grape variety, Viognier, is a traditional winemaking technique in France's northern Rhone Valley. The addition of Viognier introduces a perfume/floral aroma to the soft red berry and spice flavours of Syrah.
