Winemaking

The individual parcels of each variety from each vineyard were separately grown, hand harvested, crushed, destemmed, and given warm, plunged, fermentations. The resulting wines remained on skins for extended maceration before pressing and malo-lactic fermentation in tank. They were run off to a mixture of new and seasoned 225-litre oak barrels, still as separate components, for maturation, topping and racking.

The individual wines were blended to create a complete wine that then received further barrel aging before egg white fining and filtration prior to bottling.

Vineyards

The grapes for this wine were hand-harvested between the 26th March and the 1st May 2002.

Origin

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s leading producer of modern claret, a reputation founded, since 1982, upon the excellence of our flagship wine, Coleraine. Exactly the same quality grape growing and winemaking applies to Woodthorpe Merlot/Cabernet, our largest selling wine. Its popularity stems from its accessible soft, ripe fruit flavours, combined with an elegant palate structure, a hallmark of all Te Mata Estate’s wines.
