The whole bunches of grapes were placed in a fermentation tank and underwent a traditional maceration carbonique fermentation for a week. The wine was drained and pressed off skins then allowed to ferment out to dryness. The resulting wine completed its malolactic fermentation and was aged for four months in tank, during which time it was racked at several stages. It was then bottled in September 2000.
Woodthorpe Gamay Noir 2001 was made from grapes hand harvested from our Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard on the 28th March 2001.
Woodthorpe vineyard is located on elevated, north-facing terraces in Hawke’s Bay Tutaekuri river valley. Between 1863 and 1914 it was home to the annual Woodthorpe races. Today it’s ideal aspect and free draining soils provide Te Mata Estate a unique location for quality grapes.
