Tasting Notes 2005
2005 was an exceptional vintage for Te Mata Estate and this release is the finest example of Woodthorpe Chardonnay that Te Mata Estate has produced so far. It is an attractive lemon colour, with aromas and flavours of fi g, nectarine, and hazelnut, on a rich seamless, palate with a sustained finish.
Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Chardonnay ‘05 is best enjoyed lightly chilled, on its own or partnered with shellfi sh, smoked fi sh, and richer dishes such as roasted white meats and risottos. It will continue to develop in the bottle for 2-4 years from harvest.
Total acidity as tartaric: 6.8g/l
Residual sugar: Nil
The fully ripe grapes were whole cluster pressed to give a fine, clear juice. This was split into separate barrel and tank fermentations. The lots in tank were fermented cold to retain their varietal aromas and flavours while the barrel fermented lots underwent malolactic fermentation and eight months’ barrel maturation. The resulting wines were blended, fi ned and then bottled in January 2006.
Te Mata Estate Woodthorpe Chardonnay ‘05 is a single vineyard wine, grown on the expansive terraces of Te Mata Estate’s Woodthorpe vineyard. It is produced entirely from the low-yielding, high-quality, Mendoza clone of chardonnay and was harvested between the 13 and 24 March 2005.
Sourced exclusively from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards, the estate vineyards wines are blended to represent the best qualities of their variety, vintage, and Hawke’s Bay origin.
