Bullnose Syrah '18

First planted in 1990, the Bullnose Vineyard’s old red iron soils produce Te Mata Estate’s finest syrah. This wine has distinct floral and spice aromas, rich flavours of plum, raspberry and blackberry, with a velvety texture.

1996 Bullnose Syrah has a dark ruby colour, and an aroma of ripe raspberries, spice from both oak and fruit, and Rhone-like savoury leather and game characters.

The palate is sustained and supple, again showing these raspberry and spice notes, all supported with a fine tannic background.

1996 Bullnose Syrah has the potential to develop in bottle for 4-8 years from harvest.

1996 Bullnose Syrah is a wonderful accompaniment to Italian food, roast and grilled red meats and game, as well as most cheeses.

Following destemming and crushing the grapes were given a warm, plunged fermentation, then maceration on skins. The young wine was then aged in new and one year old 225 litre French oak barrels for a period of 15 months, during which time it was topped, racked and egg-white fined.


The grapes for 1996 Bullnose Syrah were hand harvested on the 9th April.


Michael Morris and Peter Cowley, vineyard partners and old car enthusiasts, named this wine after the pre-1928 Morris Cowley car, nicknamed Bullnose due to its distinctive radiator. The bull emblem of the label is drawn from the Bullnose car’s radiator crest.
