Tasting Notes 2000
Awatea 2000 is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
2000 Awatea has a dark ruby colour, aromas of dark berry fruits, violets and spice, leading to a rich, ripe palate given great length by a backbone of fine fruit tannins.
Awatea 2000 will continue to develop in bottle for 6-10 years from harvest.
It is a superb accompaniment to full flavoured cuisines featuring red meats game and cheeses.
Total acidity as tartaric: 5.3g/l
Residual sugar: Dry
The grapes were destemmed and crushed, then given a warm, plunged fermentation and maceration on skins. Individual wines were pressed, had their malolactic fermentation and were then racked to new and older barrels for maturation until November 2001. During this time the wines were topped, racked, blended and egg white fined.
Awatea 200 was hand harvested from a number of our vineyards between the 6th and the 18th of April.
Awatea takes its name from the legendary ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning ‘Eye of the Dawn’) that sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930’s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
