Tasting Notes 1999
1999 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc grapes.
1999 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot has a mid ruby colour, lifted aromas of cedar, boysenberry and plum, rich red berry flavours and a soft sustained finish.
1999 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot will continue to develop in bottle for 5-7 years from harvest.
It is an ideal accompaniment to classical full flavoured European cuisines, featuring red meats and cheeses.
Total acidity as tartaric: 5.4g/l
Residual sugar: Dry
Following destemming and crushing, the grapes had a warm, plunged fermentation and a period of maceration on skins. The individual wines were pressed, underwent malolactic fermentation and then run to new and used barrels for maturation until November 2000. During this time the wines were topped, racked, blended and egg white fined.
1999 Awatea grapes were hand harvested between the 24th March and the 8th April.
Awatea takes its name from the legendary ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning ‘Eye of the Dawn’) that sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930’s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
