Tasting Notes 1994
1994 Awatea has a dark ruby colour. It has an aroma of ripe plums and black currants, together with cedar and smoke background. The palate continues the ripe fruit and supple, berry flavours, supported by firm tannins.
1994 Awatea is an ideal accompaniment to red meats, and cheeses, dishes containing herbs and spices, Italian and other robust cuisine.
The 1994 Awatea is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc and 36% Merlot. It has the potential to improve in bottle for 5-8 years from harvest.
Total acidity as tartaric: 5.7g/l
Residual sugar: Dry
The grapes were destemmed, crushed, and fermented as individual lots, then pressed and run to French oak barriques, both new and used, for ageing and blending.
The grapes for 1994 Awatea were hand picked between the 20th April and the 3rd May.
Awatea takes its name from the legendary ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning ‘Eye of the Dawn’) that sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930’s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
