Tasting Notes 1993

1993 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot has a dark-ruby colour, an elegant aroma of spice, cedar and ripe raspberries. It has a palate evidencing careful use of oak in the smoky background flavour and long, gentle tannins.

1993 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot and has a development potential of 5-8 years from harvest.

It is a perfect partner to red meats, Italian and other well seasoned foods and cheese.

Winemaking

The grapes were destemmed, crushed, given a traditional, plunged and macerated fermentation and were transferred to 225 litre oak barriques for 17 months ageing, during which time they were topped, racked and fined.

Vineyards

The grapes for 1993 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot were hand-harvested between the 7th and 20th May.

Origin

Awatea takes its name from the legendary ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning ‘Eye of the Dawn’) that sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930’s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
