Tasting Notes 1992
1992 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon; 4% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. It has a deep crimson colour with aromas of currants, cedar oak and mint, and a palate of big tannins and ripe berries.
1992 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot has a development span of 4-10 years from harvest.
Total acid as tartaric: 5.8g/l
Residual sugar: Dry
The bunches were destemmed, crushed, and fermented to dryness with the cap being plunged. The skins were then macerated in the wine for a further 10-15 days, and then following malolactic fermentation the components of the wine were run into French Oak, 70% of which was new, where it was aged for 18 months.
1992 Awatea Cabernet/Merlot was hand harvested between the 21st and 30th of April.
Awatea takes its name from the legendary ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning ‘Eye of the Dawn’) that sailed the Auckland - Sydney - Wellington route in the late 1930’s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
